Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, and Nuceiva. These are all names given by different manufacturers to botulinum toxin (BT), a neuromodulator created by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. In essence, it is a purified protein that reduces action at the motor end plate, the interface where your nervous system instructs your muscles to contract. This forces the affected muscles to relax and this action alone is used to treat a variety of conditions.
Everyone is familiar with BT’s ability to treat fine lines and wrinkles on our face by relaxing the muscles underneath. What’s amazing is that BT can be used therapeutically to treat a wide range of conditions that you may not have considered. These can include chronic headaches, migraines, jaw clenching, teeth grinding, TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) pain, and even hyperhidrosis (severe sweating to the underarm and hands).
Full effects of BT treatments typically take 2 weeks and the duration of effect ranges anywhere from 3-4 months for aesthetic treatments and up to 6 months or more for some therapeutic treatments.
